Our History
Gibbs Memorial Baptist Church originated from a group of Baptists that
first built the meeting house on the North Bank of Sandy Creek two miles from this place. It was a great church and served the Baptist needs of this community for many years. Recognizing a need for a Baptist church in this area, a group of fourteen met in the school building on the Second Sunday in May 1900 and organized this Church. The formalities of organization were about as follows:

Besides those who wished to join the new church were six men present: three ministers and three laymen who were deacons. They organized themselves into a Presbytery, electing the Rev. W.S. Walker of Monroe, president, and J.E. Nunnally of the Bethel Church, secretary.

The fourteen charter members were: Lucy Preston, Lizzie Florence, Julia
Gibbs, T.A. Gibbs, W.H. Hale, Mary Hale, M.E. Preston, D.F.L. Montgomery,
Sarah Montgomery, J.B. Harper, Lucy Harper, Fannie Hansford, Amanda
Maughon, and W.M. Fambrough. The majority of these members came from
Sandy Creek as well as the Braswell Church. The current sanctuary was constructed in 1905 and named The Baptist Church of Bostwick. In 1907, it was named Gibbs Chapel Baptist Church, and in 1947, it became Gibbs Memorial Baptist Church, named after deacon T.A. Gibbs.
Gibbs has a rich history of dedicated members that have made a
significant contribution to the spiritual development of this community. May
God continue to bless us as we serve together.
